DSL internet: the phone-line fallback, explained honestly
DSL delivers internet over ordinary copper telephone lines at 10–140 Mbps. Carriers are actively replacing it with fiber, but millions of rural and small-town addresses still rely on it, so here's the honest 2026 picture, and the upgrade paths worth checking first.
Availability comes from our coverage database and provider-published service areas; final serviceability and pricing are confirmed on your call. Prices verified October 22, 2026.
What DSL is good for
Email, browsing, SD/HD streaming on one or two screens, and smart-home basics. A dedicated line means no neighborhood congestion, and pricing runs $40–$65/mo with simple terms.
Its hard limits
Speed drops with distance from the exchange; uploads crawl at 1–20 Mbps; and 4K streaming or multi-user households will hit the ceiling fast. AT&T caps legacy DSL-based plans at 1.5 TB/mo.
Check these before settling for DSL
AT&T Internet Air ($60/mo 5G fixed wireless), T-Mobile/Verizon 5G home internet, new fiber builds (Frontier and AT&T are converting DSL areas monthly), and modern satellite. Any of these usually beats DSL today.
